Response to Climate Crisis & Water Scarcity
Tree Plantation Shirui
Responding to climate change and its impact has become a global challenge. This challenge is no exception in the TTA area of operation – Ukhrul and Kamjong districts of Manipur, India. Widespread deforestation, rampant use of fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, inadequate water and waste management, etc. are becoming alarmingly unsafe for future inhabitants in the region. Global warming, unpredictable rainfall, extreme climate, increasing health issues, invasion and extinction of species are becoming more prevalent day by day.
TTA has taken up projects to combat these challenges since 2008. We are engaged in creating awareness as well as campaigning for conservation of forest, rain harvest, and organic food production. Since the beginning of the project, TTA has covered more than 100 villages through survey program, awareness campaign, workshops and demonstration. TTA has demonstrated building and installing of 20 low cost plastic water tank. TTA has also acquired a 20 acres (approx.) forest land as demo-site for preservation of forest along with its natural flora and fauna.
TTA is encouraged to see the popualtion of the region gained awareness and started taking up measures to combat the challenges of climate crisis. Random burning of forest (wild fire) has decreased significantly. Many villages have adopted regulations restricting the use of chemical fertilizers, herbcides, and pesticides. Hunting and fishing rules and laws are regulated as well as for selling and/or commercializing forest produces. Many villages have begun to mark out forest for preservation. Tree plantations with indegenous fruit bearing varieties are seen in many wasteland and roadsides.
TTA continues to engage with communities in combating global challenges of climate change and water scarcity through aforestation and organic living.
